How to Restore Your Trunk to Factory Specs.

Over time your trunk becomes completely filled with oil and so much gunk that is just about impossible to remove it. The factory trunk did not come with any kind of fabric that I have seen a lot of owners put in their trunk. It is actually sprayed with a special paint called Trunk Spatter. Ford uses the Grey Aqua.

Step 1: buy a rust inhibitor with acid in it. Needs to be very powerful. must wear glasses and an N95 mask. Purchase your Quart of Trunk Spatter (Grey is original), heavy duty wire brush, masking tape, paper or plastic to keep the spray fro going where you do not want it to. You will need a shop vac. Buy a cheap Harbor Freight spray gun.

Step 2: Read the direction of the acid spray. I ended up spraying mine and letting it soak about 5 times throughout the day and in between I would use the wire brush to scrape as much gunk as I could. *keep in mind where the factory stopped spraying the spatter, you should be able to tell. Remove the back hatch that leads to the back seat. * If you remove the sound deadener that is partial hidden in the wheel wells then put them back when you are done. Its in the judges rule book that they check to make sure it is still there..

Step 3: Once you have gotten all the oil and gunk off that will come off then tape off the area like you would as if your painting your car. Wipe out the rest of loose stuff with some laquir thinner.

Step 4. I used a basic spray can of primer and it worked fine.

Step 5: The Trunk Spatter is water soluble so you can put in about 10 percent water so it doesn’t keep getting stuck when spraying, some people put up to 20 percent but 10 is fine. Spray your trunk areas and per the judge rule book the factory got a little over spray on the gas boot which they check for that when judging. After that you are finished.

Here is a finished product.

Notes

*Replace weatherstripping while you’re at it

*If you still have the spare repaint it the wheel and make it look nice.

*I still have the original air can but it doesn’t work but I’m going to repaint it and put a new sticker on it

*Judges check to ensure you have the OEM tire iron and the straps; I ordered one.
